Can i dye burlap

I had heaps of light colored burlap fibers all over my black fleece jacket. I started getting itchy and decided then that I would steer clear of my washer and dryer for this project but use big plastic buckets instead.

Once my burlap was dry, I noticed how many wrinkles it suddenly had??? I then set it higher bit by bit, until I reached a spot between wool and cotton and was able to get most of the wrinkles out. Still needs a little work, though.

Click here if you want to see how I gave the green burlap an aged look on my Nail Head Stool project. Thank you, Mel. Have a nice weekend.. Thanks for the tutorial! Do you know if this dye is permanent?

So if I spill water on it, will it wash out? Hi Vida, The dye is permanent; and it should not wash out if some water is spilled on it; however, if the dyed fabric is put in the wash, it will fade just a bit, each time. I hope that makes sense, let me know if still unclear. Thank you so much. I have the tan colored burlap and I need to dye it grey. Do you think the normal measurments and time recommended on the RIT package will work?

I know there are other solutions, but there comes a point when I get tired of a project and just want it done! I headed to my local Hobby Lobby, on the hunt for burlap. I am into texture, and a burlap cork board would give me just that.

Very disappointed with the color choices…white, whiter and whitest! Hello, I was envisioning a tobacco color burlap…. Few minutes of internal debate later, I purchased the burlap.

Driving from store to store was not appealing to me, and I knew I could fix this problem. Have you ever dyed anything using tea bags? I promise….. Fill the large pot with water. Add in your 10 tea bags. Turn your burner onto High and bring the water to a boil. Boil the water and tea bags for 10 minutes before adding your fabric. Carefully add in your fabric. I had to fold the burlap up a few times to get it to fit inside the pan. Let it boil just a few minutes longer and then turn the burner off.

Now you have to sit tight and be patient……. I know, I know…. Stir the fabric every so often with a wooden spoon. Be careful, it will be very hot. Which is the main reason you are going to have to wait 2 hours before pulling it out of the pot. It gets messy, and I was all by my lonesome. When the water temperature has cooled enough, drain it in your sink. Rinse your fabric with water until the water runs clear.

Depending on your yardage, this may take a bit of time. Not the color you desire? No problem. Just start the process over again. Easy Peasy! It would look really awesome to dye some burlap for your burlap rag wreath tutorial nice fall colors or the kitchen wreath tutorial you recently had on your blog.

I thought about dying the burlap rag wreath, however it would be too hard to take it all apart and start over again. I will dye more burlap in the future for sure!

The roses look awesome, perfect for fall. They are so cute! Love it on the burlap flowers! No not at all. They are still just as vibrant as the first day. Would I do it in the bathtub? Rinse, leave in the tub so most of the water can drain away and then hang on the clothes line to dry? Followed by cleaning the tub with bleach. Thanks Debbie — I look forward to your reply, Margaret.

Hi Margaret, I would say do it in the kitchen sink preferably and let it soak for a bit. It does not take long for the dye to soak in. I think it would be easier clean up as well. Just be sure, one to have gloves on and two to prep the around the sink with some plastic garbage bags.
