The mark of a strong monster movie is human characters that the audience can actually care about. Scheider exudes the everyman quality that Brody needed and is more than likable enough for viewers to root for him all the way. Mayor Vaughn is the one who puts those residents in danger by refusing to close the beach and encouraging people to go swimming. When Alex Kintner is eaten by the shark and his grieving mother slaps Brody for letting it happen, he decides to go out into the ocean and get rid of the shark once and for all, standing defiantly in the face of heartless, ineffectual government.
It was supposed to show up a lot more, but behind-the-scenes problems with the mechanical shark forced Spielberg to get creative and use dislodged decking and harpooned flotation barrels as stand-ins for the shark, dragging them across the surface of the ocean. In most scenes, the viewer has to picture the shark in their head, which is much scarier.

Hendricks says there was a fatal shark attack on the beach early that morning and that they have to close the beaches.
Brody watches the boys swim their mile in the bay with their instructor in a boat beside them. Announcing the presence of a shark could cause a panic during the big holiday. The mayor has the ferry return to the dock. Composer John Williams has said that this ominous music was meant to represent the shark as an "unstoppable force" of "mindless and instinctive attacks. Indeed, not once during the attack on Chrissie do we actually see any piece of the shark, and yet the combination of her terrified thrashing and the unsettling music is enough to convey the attack without any appearance by the attacker.
These moments communicate a lot of small but important details to the viewer very quickly without impeding the flow of the story. While we might expect the filmmakers to decide which conversation is more important and focus us on that one, we instead hear them at the same volume, keeping us focused on each but preventing us from catching everything that one is saying without losing pieces of the other.
It also introduces an element of excitement and chaos to the scene, and will be used to even greater effect later in the film. Our understanding of Amity as a quiet, excitement-less town is crucial to the devastating impact of the shark attacks to come. The Question and Answer section for Jaws is a great resource to ask questions, find answers, and discuss the novel.
Title of Book. A riffly blur, color alternating with black and white. The dizziness stops on a book page showing a black and white rendering of eight species of shark. I think that this was the tag line for the movie version of the book. It says so much with so little. The line implies that there is something very dangerous in the water that can strike just when we think it is safe to enter the water.
It implies I think the suspense comes when the reader is told what a wonder the shark is.
