If it was longer and had more drawn out words the energy would appear impersonal. The Speech contains two extremes of sentence length, ranging from 80 to 6 words. A high proportion are on the short side. The varying sentence length helps keep the listeners attention. If it were all the same sentence length then nothing would be emphasized and John F. Kennedy would sound monotone.

Additionally, Kennedy employs alliteration at several points during his address. An alliteration affects an audience by making a certain sentence stick with them.

Kennedy further stresses his points to his audience through repetition. He repeats his idea of working together toward a better world several times, which makes his plan clear to the audience and gives them confidence that it can be achieved. Finally, Kennedy uses metaphors during his speech. It gives the world hope that improvement is on its way. He also effectively lays out his goals and makes it clear what he expects from the citizens of the world.

These imperatives suggest the action that should be taken by the citizens. All these are adding formality to the speech. The devices used by Kennedy are all carriers of meaning and they all serve to make the speech a more effective and appealing one.
